Considering he put Y Tu Mama Tambien, Catch Me If You Can, Spirited Away, Paid in Full and 24 Hour Party People on his 10-best movie list last year, you'd expect New York Times film critic and all-around pop-culture observer Elvis Mitchell to be a man of peculiar, unique tastes.
Turns out this is especially true of his music collection. A "frustrated DJ" who has spun records on the California-based alternative-groove public-radio show Chocolate City (weeknights on www.kcrw.com), he often plays a intriguing mix of retro jazz/soul/funk numbers (mostly from rare LPs that have yet to be reissued on CD) that always have a story behind them.
