As CONTRIBUTING EDITOR of Sign Language Studies, I am pleased to introduce this special issue on the National Association of the Deaf (NAD) sign language films and efforts to preserve and protect American Sign Language and Deaf cultural history. As the works in this volume demonstrate, the NAD films are an especially rich source for study. The central importance of preservation informs all of these works, and each is indebted to individuals like Roy Stewart and George Veditz for providing us with such vivid documentation.
