Before a standing-room only crowd at the Christ Universal Temple, 11901 S. Ashland, talk show queen Oprah Winfrey introduced Oscar-winning actor Sidney Poitier. The first African American to win the Oscar, Poitier, now 76, gave an oral chronicle of his life from boyhood to one of Hollywood's greatest actors--a feat he credits to his no nonsense mom who never spared the rod and a hair raising experience with prejudice that kept him from looking back.
Known as a living icon, Poitier was introduced by Winfrey as one of those who helped shaped history and break down barriers, not someone who tells us about the movement, but, one of the movement.
