It's a tribute to Tim Burton's skill as a director (and, presumably, the power of the novel that serves as the source of his latest film) that folks are likely to leave Big Fish philosophizing about the nature of time, memory and character. Watching the film is like wandering a hall of mirrors wherein the impossibly grandiose memories of a dying man, the efforts of his son to understand him (and to distinguish reality from fantasy) and whatever personal musings have been sparked during the process are all constantly being reflected. Unfortunately, and ironically for a film in which storytelling features so prominently, those personal reflections ultimately become more engaging than the film ...
