Ulysses Tzanetatos is the personification of philoxenia, Greek for hospitality. The owner and frequent desk clerk at the Hotel Kastro in Sami on the Ionian island of Kefalonia, had welcomed us warmly in perfect English the day we arrived. He explained that after the devastation of World War II and the earth-quake of 1953, he left Kefalonia to seek his fortune in Canada where he became a successful businessman. Returning to his native island in the 1990s he built the Hotel Kastro named for the castle on the site of the ancient capital. He and his wife Eleni now spend the winter in their adopted Montreal, and return every summer to run the hotel.
