Public relations play an important role in contemporary serial murder investigations. Proper protection of the public requires public information, and selective publicity actually elicits valuable tips from the public.
But there is a problem. Too much serial murder case publicity sometimes benefits the killer, and it can divulge 'polygraph keys/ or deliberately withheld case facts used to verify confessions and identify the real offender.
First, we will explain the police/media relationships during serial murder investigations. Then, we will consider police media relations policies, followed by analysis of the benefit of serial murder publicity, and the polygraph key issue. We will conclude ...
