Measuring health care quality may prove to be the best long-term strategy for controlling health care expenses.
But in the short term, businesses must still find a way to cope with annual double-digit increases in the cost of employee health care benefits.
A Wisconsin example of how employers can band together to tackle both concerns at once is the Employer Health Care Alliance Cooperative in Madison.
Like other health care purchasing groups that negotiate on behalf of employers with self-funded health plans, the Alliance bargains with health care providers to get better prices for its 160 business members and affiliates.
