Article: New York Hikes Speed Limit On More Roads

ALBANY - Using a new law for the first time, Gov. George Pataki said April 26 the speed limit would rise to 65 mph from 55 on 134 more miles of superhighway in New York state.

The higher speeds would allow faster travel and more rapid shipment of goods, Pataki said.

In March, a state law took effect that allows New York's Department of Transportation and the state Thruway Authority to administratively raise speed limits on limitedaccess superhighways that meet design and safety standards.

To qualify, the roads must be divided highways with grade-separated interchanges and be closed to pedestrian and bicycle traffic.

Previously, the speed limit could be increased to 65 mph only by a vote ...
