In nature, different microorganisms coexist in the environment and compete for the available limited resources. This competition can result in the increase in numbers ol one organism or the elimination of another. Pseudomonas aeruginosa, a gramnegative, non-fermentative, non-spore forming bacillus commonly found in soil and water produces a variety of diffusible secondary metabolite phenazine pigment products after an extended period oi growth in broth or on agar that color the growth medium a dark blue.
