During the past 10 years, oleoresin capsicum (OC) or pepper spray has become a standard non-lethal weapon in the arsenal of most police departments. When properly used, pepper spray is an effective non-lethal alternative for officers. To ensure OC is properly used, departments must have up-to-date policies and officers must be routinely trained in its use.
Most agencies have policies regulating the use of OC and require their officers to attend an introductory training class before being allowed to carry or use it.
