This article describes the use of an oven bag as a sterile chamber for culture initiation and tissue transfer. Plant tissue culture is an ideal tool for introducing students to plants, cloning and experimental design. Many of the problems previously encountered, such as obtaining nutrient media and equipment, have been solved by various scientific supply companies. Difficulties with contamination still persist, though, and the primary solution has been to invest in a transfer cabinet or hood. In the past, the cost of a sterile work area had exceeded my budget. I had heard of using oven bags to keep media dust-free during storage and thought they could be used as a sterile transfer area. ...
