AUTISM SPECTRUM DISORDERS
Abstract
Studies indicate that early diagnosis and intervention contribute to better long term outcomes for pre-school children with autism. It enables development of communication skills and helps avoid and reduce behavioural difficulties. It optimises opportunities for learning and developmental progress, provides family support and allows for educational planning.
Primary care professionals, particularly health visitors are in an ideal position to identify features of autism in the pre-school population.
