Article: News and Views; Overall Crime on Black College Campuses Is Down in Recent Years, But the Murder Rate Is Up

Although black colleges and universities account for only about 2 percent of all students in the nation, 40 percent of all murders on college campuses in 1999 occurred on the campuses of black colleges. In 1999 there were 10 reported murders or incidents of manslaughter on college campuses throughout the United States. Four of these murders were at black colleges.

- A 23-year-old black student at Southern University in Baton Rouge was shot in the back as he ran down the hall-way of a campus dormitory. Reports indicated that the killing was drug related.
