Article: MIBI SPECT Alone Before Parathyroidectomy

Researchers from Tel Aviv University (Israel) reported in the April issue of Archives of Surgery (2004; 139:433-437) on a study designed to assess early postinjection "^sup 99m^Tc-sestamibi (MIBI) SPECT as the sole localizing procedure before focused parathyroidectomy in patients with primary hyperparathyroidism. The study by Schachter et al. included 82 consecutive patients with primary hyperparathyroidism who underwent a standard double-tracer subtraction planar scan for preoperative localization. Patients were scheduled for minimally invasive radioguided surgery. On the morning of scheduled surgery, each patient received ^sup 99m^Tc-MIBI and underwent an early, postinjaction SPECT study. ...
