Article: Analyzing the potential for recycling old utility poles

Jeff Morrell of Oregon State University's Department of Forest Products is beginning a research study on the reuse potential for preservative treated wood poles once they have lost their usefulness for supporting overhead wires. In the introduction to his research proposal, Morrell notes that poles may be taken to either an MSW facility or a secure hazardous waste facility: "The cost for this form of disposal in Oregon ranges from as little as $10 to up to $500. ... Landfilling poles clearly eliminates a risk, but it also wastes a valuable resource. ... A large majority of a pole contains sound wood that could be remanufactured into other products."
