LAST YEAR, 20.1 million (64.5 percent) of the 31.1 million scrap tires generated in California were diverted from stockpiles or disposal. But despite the nearly doubling of scrap tires recycled annually in the state between 1990 and 1999, the number of scrap tires generated continues to exceed the number diverted.
Based upon industry data and figures gathered by the California Integrated Waste Management Board (CIWMB), it is estimated that about 1.6 million or five percent of the scrap tires generated in 1999 were reused. Another 8.6 million tires ...
