Ancient Egypt has left a rich and varied textual legacy. Nevertheless, evidence on dance per se from literary sources is rare, since the ancient Egyptians saw no need to describe in words something that was so familiar to them. There are a number of terms that were used for the verb "to dance," the most common being ib3. Other terms that describe specific dances or movements are known but unfortunately these often occur simply as "labels" to scenes or in contexts where they say little or nothing of the nature of the dance in question.
