Israeli blockades have brought Palestine to a standstill. Losses are estimated at $1 billion. Crops are rotting in the fields, industry has come to a halt and food shortages have begun to bite. Michael Jansen reports from Jerusalem.
Palestinians in the Israeli-occupied West Bank and Gaza are being forced to make difficult choices between stones and sustenance as they watch their economy crumble. Soon after the Palestinian intifada began in October, Israel mounted a siege and imposed a near total economic blockade on the Palestinian self-rule enclaves, which comprise 18 per cent of the West Bank and 60 per cent of the Gaza Strip.
