"I know where I am in the heap of sound engineers, but I could be a virtuoso at surround sound," says Mike Sokol, sound engineer and owner of JMS Productions, Inc. in Hagerstown. Surround sound, also called 5.1 sound because it uses 5 speakers and one sub woofer, is appealing to Sokol because, "the engineer decides the music's treatment during recording and in post production. It's not only knowing how to push knobs but also psychological. How do I want people to feel when they hear it? Perhaps as if they're in a night club right down front. It depends on the style of the music. Musical taste is an important aspect."
