Stroke in Canada: The need for a new approach

Stroke is a major cause of death and disability in our society. In 1997, approximately 70,000 Canadians were hospitalized for stroke;' cerebrovascular disease (mainly stroke) caused 16,048 deaths, accounting for 20% of all cardiovascular disease deaths;' and overall, close to 300,000 Canadians are stroke survivors.2'3 With an aging Canadian population, the number of strokes is projected to increase in the coming years3 and the number of deaths (in both men and women) is expected to increase by 15% between 1995 and 2016.'
