The Citadel Military College of South Carolina in Charleston recently announced that this coming fall it would launch a minor degree program in African-American studies. A major degree program in black studies may follow in the years ahead. The Citadel says that the new program is designed to "encourage an appreciation for the contributions of people of African descent and to emphasize the importance of diversity to the Corps of Cadets and the surrounding community."
The new black studies effort will require 15 course hours of class study. Students seeking a minor in African-American studies will be required to take courses in South Carolina and southern history, the civil rights movement, ...
