If you, a friend, a relative or a loved one, unfortunately is injured -- badly. Or you need a life-saving operation that requires a massive blood transfusion. Who are you going to turn to?

In most cases, the American Red Cross and similar agencies. But -- citing a summer of worse-than-usual blood shortages -- the Red Cross reports that America is facing a dire shortage of supply.

Providing half of the nation's blood needs, the Red Cross said earlier this week it had a less than three-day supply on hand.
