Wave of international investment hits West Virginia in the '90s

Throughout the 1990s, a wave of international investments hit the United States economy, and west Virginia was caught up in that wave.

"We had one Japanese company in this state in 1990 Wheeling-Nisshin Steel Co., which as a joint venture between Nisshin Steel and Wheeling-Pittsburgh Steel," said Stephen E. Spence, director of the international division at the West Virginia Development Office.

"Now we have 16 Japanese companies," he said.

And this growth spurt represents only a fraction of the progress in drawing international investments into the state.
