Premature ovarian failure is a condition characterized by sex-steroid deficiency, anicnorrhea, and infertility in women younger than 40 years of age. It affects approximately 1% of women. Premature ovarian failure is defined by the presence of at least 4 months of amenorrhea and at least two serum FSH concentrations measuring greater than 40 IU/L (obtained at least 1 month apart) in women younger than 40 years of age. At one time, premature ovarian failure was considered irreversible and was described as "premature menopause". Premature ovarian failure is not an early natural menopause.
