In Canada, the relationship between specialists and Family Physicians with regards to patient care has become increasingly more strained over the years. A 1991 task force of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada and The College of Family Physicians of Canada made 19 recommendations, the essence of which was that Specialists should make themselves available to see patients in a timely way, address the problems that they find, communicate their advice in a timely way, and return the patient back to the Family Physicians care.
