Article: Annexation Still Viable In Lakes

The City of Lauderdale Lakes this week approved an ordinance allowing for a referendum in unincorporated areas this fall on whether they want to join with Lakes.

Gov. Jeb Bush vetoed annexation bills for several unincorporated areas and Lauderdale Lakes last week, saying he was concerned that the areas were not contiguous to Lauderdale Lakes. But under Florida Statute 171, which helps to give municipalities more control over expansion and annexation, Lakes was able to place the referendum on the ballot.
