Engineers say Texas pool suction stronger when Chicago tourists drowned

FORT WORTH, Texas - On the day that four Chicago tourists drowned at the Fort Worth Water Gardens, the water was deeper and the suction stronger than it should have been, according to an engineering firm report released Tuesday.

The pumps for the Active Pool, which is not meant for swimming, had been struggling recently because the grate over the pool drain was 50 percent blocked by leaves and other debris, said officials at the engineering firm Freese and Nichols.

A city employee, who had limited training and worked at the Water Gardens since January, had raised the water level to 8.5 feet, more than 3 feet higher than the usual level -- which helped the pumps work better but created more ...
