As a lifelong New Jersey farmer, I have experienced first-hand the changes in the state's agricultural landscape over the past five decades. Despite these vast changes, and sometimes because of them, the nickname "Garden State" applies to New Jersey as much today as it did half a century ago.
Farmers in New Jersey have always known the key to survival was changing with the times. Fifty years ago, the state's top agricultural sectors were poultry, dairy, vegetables and ornamental plants. Today, the horticultural sector dominates, followed by vegetables, fruit and the equine sector. Poultry still remains vital with more than 2 million hens.
