Intake of alcohol is the main cause of chronic pancreatitis in Western countries, accounting for about 70% of cases.1 It is easy to understand that a person who frequently drinks large amounts of alcohol is at risk for chronic pancreatitis, but why do people who claim modest intake also get the disease? Some people probably drink more than they admit, but family and friends confirm other patients' accounts of modest use. In this issue of Mayo Clinic Proceedings, Lankisch et al 2 examine the phenomenon of chronic pancreatitis among people who drink modest amounts of alcohol.
