University Medical Center, Tucson-Extending the dosing interval of prophylactic IV acyclovir from 8 to 12 hours for bone marrow transplant recipients results in a significant cost reduction with no negative impact on efficacy.
Study purpose. Traditionally, prophylactic IV acyclovir has been given as 250 mg/m^sup 2^ every 8 hours beginning on day 1 after bone marrow transplantation until initiation of oral prophylactic acyclovir following hematologic recovery and resolution of mucositis, or requirement for antiviral treatment.
