FDA Oncology Revamping May Speed Approval of Cancer Drugs

Companies focused on cancer cures are hopeful the U.S. Food and Drug Administration's plan to rework the unit responsible for cancer drugs and therapeutic biologics will lead to better relations with reglators and faster approval times.

Administrators in July announced plans to create an Office of Oncology Drug Products and a new crosscutting oncology program.

The goal: to encourage a "stronger and more consistent approach to the review process for drugs."

Irvine's Spectrum Pharmaceuticals Inc., a prostate cancer drug maker, and Peregrine Pharmaceuticals Inc., a Tustin company working on a drug that attacks blood vessels on tumors, are two such companies developing cancer-related treatments.
