The majority of commercial banks in the United States are community banks, based on asset size. In recognition of the specific interests of community banks, the American Bankers Association founded the ABA Community Bankers Council in 1981. The purpose of the Council is to:
Create a formal means for channeling community bank chief executive officer opinions and ideas to ABA's officers, board of directors and Government Relations Council;
Guide the ABA on legislative and regulatory initiatives and membership and communications strategy;
Respond to the unique needs of community bank chief executives through ABA services; and
Provide ABA advocacy at the state and local level.
