Speaking at the launch of the Equal Opportunities Commission's Taskforce report on Equal Pay at the end of February, Employment Minister Tessa Jowell said: "At the start of the 21st century, the fact that there is a pay gap at all between women and men is fundamentally wrong -- let alone that there is a pay gap as high as 18%. Let me be quite clear: in a modern economy, in this day and age, unequal pay for equal work is totally unacceptable.
