Considering that so many western movies include a bit part for the local newspaper, the frontier press would seem to be an integral part of western history. It is therefore surprising that so little attention has been paid to the frontier press, either as a subject or as a source for historical information. In Red Blood and Black Ink David Dary chides historians for failing to read frontier newspapers and sets out to show how valuable newspapers can be to our understanding of western development.
