UZBEK JOURNALIST FACES CHARGES

While a gay Uzbek journalist was scheduled to be released early from prison for what human rights groups called politically motivated charges, his release likely was going to be delayed until at least July, a prison official said in mid-June, according to the Associated Press.

Protestors and human rights demonstrators gathered in support of Ruslan Sharipov - a journalist convicted of sodomy, having sex with minors and other charges in August 2003 - outside the prison in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, on June 12, the AP reported.
