A few short years ago photographs of children murdered in the streets of Brazilian cities were frequently given prime space in First World newspapers and popular magazines. Tobias Hecht's book about the street children of metropolitan Recife, which includes the neighboring city of Olinda, is a thoughtful and detailed volume written in prose refreshingly free of the sensational treatment accorded this difficult subject by many writers.
