August Truck Sales Surpassed Year-Earlier Month

U.S. retail sales of medium-duty trucks increased 7.1% in August from a year earlier, despite a significant sales drop in the Class 3 market and a slight decline in Class 7.

Truck makers sold 25,958 trucks in Classes 3-7, up from 24,245 units a year earlier, according to Ward's Communications.

The Class 6 category - gross vehicle weight rating between 19,500 and 26,000 pounds - showed the largest increase, jumping 61.9% to 6,090 units sold in August.

Sales of Class 5 trucks increased 21.1% to 2,689 units for the month; Class 4 sales rose 20.2% to 3,645, Ward's said.

Sales of Class 7 trucks, which are rated from 26,000 to 33,000 pounds, declined 3.9% to 6,561 units.
