The treatment of optic neuritis (ON) has changed over the last several years. Clinicians should be aware of recent evidence-based reviews for the management of ON.
Treatment of optic neuritis
Corticosteroids (e.g., adrenocorticotrophic hormone [ACTH], prednisone, dexamethasone, and methylprednisolone) remain the major treatment option for typical acute ON in adults.
Kaufman et al. reviewed the literature on the treatment of ON and graded the available evidence from 1966 to 1999.1 These authors defined the grade of the evidence as follows:
* Class I: Well-designed, randomized, controlled clinical trial, including meta-analyses of such trials
