After dominating new powerplant construction for most of the past two decades, natural gas appears to be losing a bit of its edge. Gas prices in the US soared this past winter, and, unexpectedly, remained high. At the same time, storage supplies of the premium fuel plummeted, in part because the high prices prompted a sell-off, but also because of the nation's return to normal winter weather, the continued malaise in gas exploration and development, and the expanded demand for gas by power producers (see box, next page).
