Article: Arlee business owners offer own U.S. 93 plan

ARLEE - Arlee business people 'don't like the idea of splitting U.S. Highway 93 into a pair of one-way "couplets" through their town and are pushing an alternate plan that would keep highway traffic running past their storefronts.

The Arlee couplet system, part of the broader plan to improve Highway 93 from Missoula to Poison, sends southbound highway traffic two blocks away from the present commercial area. Northbound traffic would follow the current highway.

"It looks like, on purpose or not, the highway is designed to put small businesses out of business," said Tony Hoyt of Hummingbird Toys and Treats, an organizer of the new Arlee Economic Development Corp.
