The so-called "Retrofit Program" of the lignite power plants of RWE Rheinbraun AG, the German Rhineland brown coal miner and power generator, has been completed with the bringing back into operation of a generating block at its Niederaussem power plant. In total, more than 300 MW power has been added due to the program. Additionally, for production of the original amount of electricity less coal need now be used. In this manner, the annual emissions of CO2 have been reduced by around 2M mt. The investment to achieve these environmental and technical improvements in the power plants was $251M.
