FAYETTE - With a 14.7% unemployment rate, there is little denying that from a business perspective things are bad in Jefferson County - and times are about to get even worse.
After about 33 years in business, the county's only industry is leaving. Fayette Enterprises, which manufactures furniture parts for Thomasville Furniture Inc., will close this June. When that happens, another 62 people out of the county's population of 8,185 (1998 Census) will be out of work.,
"More than likely we'll go back to Thomasville, N.C.," said plant manager Connie Kanoy. Kanoy said the company was downsizing because of economic conditions. He acknowledged that leaving Jefferson County would bring harder times ...
