Pathologic quiz case: Crystal deposition disease of the knee joint

A 65-year-old woman presented with recurrent right knee pain. She had experienced similar persistent and debilitating symptoms 8 months earlier. Evaluation of arthrocentesis on 2 separate occasions was unremarkable. This was followed 5 months later by arthroscopy. Magnetic resonance imaging of the right knee showed lowsignal-intensity lesions compatible with pigmented villonodular synovitis. Biopsy was performed.
