"Green industry" is big business in Illinois

With about $2.9 billion in sales, Illinois' "green industry" is outdoing corn, soybeans and combined production of beef and pork, University of Illinois (UI) researchers say.

In 1999 more than 9,000 green industry businesses including lawn care, landscaping and garden centers in Illinois had more than 2.3 million endusers of their products and services.

These findings are from a survey of businesses, agencies and institutions that produce, maintain, use or sell plant materials. Thirty-one percent of the more than 12,000 questionnaires distributed were returned.

Cash receipts from corn in 1999 totalled nearly $2.6 billion, soybeans $2.1 billion, hogs and pigs $646 million and cattle $490 ...
