Nurse navigators guide breast cancer patients

Michele Schonbrunner and Patti Patterson may not carry compasses, but the two nurses are full-time navigators.

York-based WellSpan Health hired Schonbrunner in February and Patterson in March to serve as the health system's first two nurse navigators.

The nurse navigators provide emotional support, answer questions, help coordinate office visits and serve as advocates for newly diagnosed breast cancer patients being treated at York Cancer Center, located in WellSpan's Apple Hill Medical Center, York Township.
