One of the most interesting aspects of this well-written, and convincingly documented study is the author's examination of the role that the Dutch American Protestant churches played in the immigrants' adaptation to their lives in the New World. Although scholars of nineteenth and early twentieth century European immigration have all noted the importance of the church in immigrants' lives, not all have given it the attention (one of six chapters) seen here.
