Wheaties honors tennis great Althea Gibson

Wheaties today unveiled a special-edition Black History Month package commemorating the career and accomplishments of tennis pioneer Althea Gibson at the Althea Gibson Early Childhood Academy in East Orange. In 1950, Gibson became the first African-American to break tennis' color barrier and went on to win five Grand Slam titles, including the 1957 and 1958 Wimbledon and U.S. Open Championships.

"This is quite an honor for me," Gibson said from her home in New Jersey. "I spent my whole life breaking new round and accomplishing things that people said I couldn't. To be recognized by Wheaties for my efforts is one of the greatest honors of my life."
