Article: McDowell County Sees Economic Development Through Prisons

WELCH - Economic recovery for McDowell County may lie with the loss of freedom for others who will be jailed in the county.

Gov. Bob Wise presented the McDowell County Economic Development Authority with $5.2 million for the state's new Stevens Correctional Center earlier this year. Funding came from the state's Economic Development Grants Committee. McDowell County Commission President Gordon Lambert said the county also had secured loans through Welchheadquartered MCNB Bank and Trust Co.

A formal contract-signing ceremony initiated the construction phase of the correctional center in October. It will occupy the former Stevens Clinic, which closed in the mid-1980s.
