Acceptance of clinical trials is not always immediate

BETHESDA, MD-Are the results of well-conducted and well-designed clinical trials accepted by the ophthalmic community?

The question was posed by Carl Kupfer, MD, director of the National Eye Institute, Bethesda, MD.

He pointed out that while the results of many trials have been groundbreaking and changed treatments and outcomes for patients, the results of other well-conducted, well-designed clinical trials, such as the Optic Neuritis Treatment Trial and the Early Treatment of Diabetic Retinopathy Study, initially were met with reluctance by members of the ophthalmic community.
