How to protect yourself against Medicare fraud claims

Unquestionably, provider fraud and abuse has become a major crusade of Medicare, which has been fueled largely by the success of the Health Care Financing Administration (HCFA) and the Office of the Inspector General (OIG) in reducing improper payments to "unscrupulous providers."

In 1996, Medicare's rate of claims paid with errors was 14%. Through the agencies' increased diligence, that number was reduced to 11% in 1997 and 7.1% in 1998. Despite these improvements, Medicare paid out a sobering $12.6 billion in improper payments in 1998.

That significant outlay certainly has fueled further efforts by HCFA and the OIG to remain fixed on the physician fraud-and-abuse ...
